carry it with you (trauma imprints)
materials: a bedsheet, traced and cut to match my exact body specifications.
parameters: The flat body is a stand-in for the traumatized self following sexual violence. It is to be carried everywhere, to every event. It may remain out of sight, and even occasionally out of mind. Suddenly something will bring it back into the front of your mind. When that happens, stage a picture. Repeat.
In this on-going project (2018-present), I stage photographs of the flat body, making what I refer to as trauma imprints. The delicate lifeless residue of a body becomes a left-over, discarded facsimile of a person who once existed. In making these shadow images of my own body, I consider what it means to be present in my own body, and what an absent brain and a present body looks like.
